Post-Session: Sensex tanks 580 pts; Nifty drops below 12,800

Equity benchmark Sensex plunged 580 points on Thursday, tracking heavy profit-booking in financial stocks amid a weak trend in global markets.

The increasing virus infections raised fears of additional restrictions and considering its impact on global economic activity, global market sentiments turned negative. This was in spite of the optimism surrounding the advanced stages of vaccine development. Indian markets also witnessed profit booking from recent highs, as investors turned cautious.

SBI, Coal India, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and JSW Steel were among major losers on the Nifty, while gainers were Power Grid Corporation, ITC, NTPC, Tata Steel and Titan Company.

The 30-share benchmark index ended at 43599.96 down by -580.09 points or by -1.31 % and then NSE Nifty was at 12771.7 down by -166.55 points or by -1.29 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 44230 and intraday low of 43518.11 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 12963 and intraday low of 12745.75

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 189.85,+2.43%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 187.85,+2.06%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 89.75,+1.64%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 523.40,+1.24%), Titan Company Ltd. (Rs. 1292.40,+1.00%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were State Bank of India (Rs. 239.75,-4.88%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 611.20,-3.93%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 478.35,-3.84%), UltraTech Cement Ltd. (Rs. 4770.00,-3.18%), Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 4534.10,-2.61%), among others.

Among the sectors, Power index was at 1927.26 up by 14.61 points or by 0.76%. Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 189.85,+2.43%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 29.15,+2.28%), Thermax Ltd. (Rs. 845.15,+2.14%), KEC International Ltd. (Rs. 343.95,+1.88%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 89.75,+1.64%),.

Bankex index was at 33205.95 down by -939.36 points or by -2.75%. Federal Bank Ltd. (Rs. 58.60,-5.33%), State Bank of India (Rs. 239.75,-4.88%), RBL Bank Ltd. (Rs. 211.85,-4.25%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 611.20,-3.93%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 478.35,-3.84%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 3212 , shares advanced were 1435 while 1564 shares declined and 213 were unchanged.
