Sensex, Nifty down on dismal macro data

Sensex and Nifty continued to trade in red, weighed down by disappointing macroeconomic data.

Hurting market sentiment, government data on Wednesday showed that industrial output contracted by 0.3 per cent in December while retail inflation jumped to a 68-month high of 7.59 per cent in January on high food prices.

Ahead of the release of IIP and inflation data, the Sensex had settled 349.76 points, or 0.85 per cent, higher at 41,565.90; and the Nifty had clocked 93.30 points, or 0.77 per cent, gains to settle at 12,201.20 on Wednesday.

Provisional data showed that foreign institutional investors bought equities worth Rs 48.81 crore on a net basis on Wednesday.

At 10: 40 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 41420.01 down by -145.89 points or by -0.35 % and then NSE Nifty was at 12154.05 down by -47.15 points or by -0.39 %.

Sensex touched intraday high of 41709.3 and intraday low of 41402.09 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 12225.65 and intraday low of 12151.95

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were State Bank of India (Rs. 329.35,+2.92%), Titan Company Ltd. (Rs. 1301.45,+2.59%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 788.10,+0.90%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2190.00,+0.90%), Nestle India Ltd. (Rs. 16388.55,+0.61%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (Rs. 6935.70,-1.52%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 744.00,-1.48%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1689.95,-1.45%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 605.85,-1.32%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 542.55,-1.23%), among others.

Among the sectors, CDS index was at 27057.15 up by 346.12 points or by 1.3%. PC Jeweller Ltd. (Rs. 22.00,+5.26%), Titan Company Ltd. (Rs. 1300.65,+2.52%), Whirlpool of India Ltd. (Rs. 2300.65,+1.84%), TTK Prestige Ltd. (Rs. 5906.25,+0.75%), Symphony Ltd. (Rs. 1335.85,+0.54%),.

Metal index was at 9726 down by -119.11 points or by -1.21%. NMDC Ltd. (Rs. 110.50,-3.66%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 176.95,-1.89%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 193.70,-1.68%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 289.25,-1.52%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 443.20,-1.06%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2135 , shares advanced were 897 while 1105 shares declined and 133 were unchanged.
