Indian benchmarks extended gains in the afternoon deals on Friday, with Sensex trading above 290 points, led by a rise in metal, PSU Bank, Pharma and Realty stocks.
On the currency front, the Indian rupee edged up by 6 paise up at 71.10 against the US dollar, erasing losses of the early session.
On the corporate front, Shares of South Indian Bank jumped almost 7 percent in intraday trade on BSE on October 18, a day after the bank reported a 20.5 percent year-on-year (YoY) rise in net profit at Rs 84.48 crore in the second quarter of FY20 against a net profit of Rs 70.13 crore in July-September quarter a year ago.
At 14:19 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 39343.58 up by 291.52 points or by 0.75 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 11665.9 up by 79.55 points or by 0.69 per cent.
In the positive trade so far, the BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 39359.94 and intraday low of 38963.6 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 11673.4 and intraday low of 11553.15.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex pack were YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 51.20,+8.02%), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (Rs. 1453.80,+2.07%), State Bank of India (Rs. 270.60,+1.94%), Reliance Industries Ltd. (Rs. 1422.85,+1.91%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 201.15,+1.75%), among others.
The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 3094.00,-0.52%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 384.40,-0.35%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 591.80,-0.23%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 2084.55,-0.17%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 61.90,-0.08%), among others.
Among the sectors, PSU index was at 6879.53 up by 165.65 points or by 2.47%. Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (Rs. 55.55,+24.69%), MMTC Ltd. (Rs. 18.55,+19.29%), Hindustan Copper Ltd. (Rs. 38.25,+18.42%), NBCC (India) Ltd. (Rs. 37.70,+9.91%), The New India Assurance Company Ltd. (Rs. 148.95,+9.12%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2743 , shares advanced were 1642 while 906 shares declined and 195 were unchanged.
