Indian benchmarks extended gains during the noon trading session amid positive global cues as Federal Reserve's Jerome Powell hinted rate cut ahead. In an appearance before his Congressional overseers on Wednesday, Powell confirmed that the US economy is still under threat and that the central bank stands ready to “act as appropriate”.
That apart, foreign fund flow, stock-specific action and rupee movement against the US dollar also supported the investor’s sentiments.
The rupee opened higher against the US dollar on Thursday, as the American currency took a back seat after US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell signalled that a rate cut could be coming soon. The rupee was trading at 68.36 a dollar.
At 12:30 hours, the 30-share benchmark index was trading at 38784.44 up by 227.4 points or by 0.59 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 11567.4 up by 68.5 points or by 0.6 per cent.
Sensex touched intraday high of 38803.24 and intraday low of 38631.31 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 11568 and intraday low of 11519.5.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex pack were Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2682.45,-2.17%), YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 91.35,-1.77%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 663.25,-1.68%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 427.60,-0.78%), Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 764.40,-0.53%), among others.
