The Indian benchmark indices ended with losses, dragged down by metal stocks, on Wednesday due to last hour sell-off after a volatile session. Among the sectors, metal index slipped 2 percent followed by auto, infra, pharma, FMCG and bank. Foreign institutional investors net sold equities worth Rs 2,011.85 crore on Tuesday, while domestic institutional investors purchased shares to the tune of Rs 2,242.91 crore, provisional data available with stock exchanges showed. Bourses in China, Japan and Korea ended in the green after US President Donald Trump hinted at the possibility of a trade deal with China. European stocks, however, opened on a weak note. Meanwhile, the Indian rupee appreciated by 11 paise to 70.33 against the US dollar intra-day. Global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 0.66 per cent lower at USD 70.77 per barrel. Among individual stocks the shares of Tata Motors tanked 8 per cent.
The 30-share index settled at 37114.88 down by -203.65 points or by -0.55 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 11157 down by -65.05 points or by -0.58 per cent. The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 37559.67 and intraday low of 37047.87 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 11286.8 and intraday low of 11136.95.
The top gainers of the BSE Sensex were Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 3002.55,+4.11%), ITC Ltd. (Rs. 297.10,+1.05%), Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1394.25,+0.68%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 716.50,+0.37%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2094.50,+0.01%), among others. On the flip side, the top losers of the BSE Sensex were YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 143.65,-8.01%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 169.60,-8.00%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 80.85,-6.37%), IndusInd Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1378.10,-3.66%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 235.60,-2.75%), among others.
Among sectors, Realty index was at 1929.72 up by 4.57 points or by 0.24%. Oberoi Realty Ltd. (Rs. 527.05,+3.27%), Godrej Industries Ltd. (Rs. 826.65,+3.16%), Sunteck Realty Ltd. (Rs. 448.20,+2.24%), Phoenix Mills Ltd. (Rs. 600.00,+1.51%), Housing Development & Infrastructure Ltd. (Rs. 20.65,+1.23%),. On the other hand, Metal index was at 10341.31 down by -219.13 points or by -2.08%. JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 268.50,-4.23%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 155.30,-3.72%), Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Ltd. (Rs. 46.20,-3.04%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 235.60,-2.75%), National Aluminium Company Ltd. (Rs. 47.80,-2.05%),.
The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2958 , shares advanced were 1089 while 1650 shares declined and 219 were unchanged.
