Mid Session: Sensex jumps 270 pts, Nifty tops 11,400; Coal India slides 2%

Indian benchmark indices are trading close to one per cent in the afternoon session on Friday. The shares of Coal India fell over 2 per cent on Friday, a day after its board approved the payment of second interim dividend. In a BSE filing, the company said its board of directors had approved the payment of second interim dividend for 2018-19 at Rs 5.85 per share with a face value of Rs 10. The company has fixed March 25 as the record date for the payment and the date of payment of the interim dividend is on or after March 29.

At 12:34 hours, the SENSEX was trading at 38025.12 up by 270.23 points or by 0.72 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 11426.55 up by 83.3 points or by 0.73 per cent. The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 38029.68 and intraday low of 37760.23 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 11428.65 and intraday low of 11370.8.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex were Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. (Rs. 1327.50,+4.49%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 192.70,+2.80%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2039.80,+2.57%), State Bank of India (Rs. 296.30,+1.77%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 394.05,+1.59%), among others. The top losers of the BSE Sensex were Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (Rs. 1697.95,-2.27%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 335.60,-2.11%), YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 246.40,-1.38%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 240.30,-1.25%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 89.10,-1.05%), among others.

Among sectors, IT index was at 15109.58 up by 212.02 points or by 1.42%. 3i Infotech Ltd. (Rs. 3.82,+9.77%), Zen Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 83.35,+3.22%), Aptech Ltd. (Rs. 177.65,+2.78%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 2039.80,+2.57%), Intellect Design Arena Ltd. (Rs. 204.65,+2.48%),. On the flip side, Metal index was at 11138.06 down by -75.17 points or by -0.67%. Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Ltd. (Rs. 51.85,-1.61%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 198.55,-1.34%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 240.30,-1.25%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 171.95,-1.01%), Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (Rs. 272.00,-0.82%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2664, shares advanced were 1320 while 1169 shares declined and 175 were unchanged.
